Sensitivity at Church

Lately I've been wondering about the sensitivity level of people at church... some people seem overly sensitive (one person I know would get personally offended if she was not asked to volunteer for something) and some seem completely insensitive to the needs of the church and its members (I've been invited to more than one "adults only" social event while being an underemployed single parent). Of course, I know I must not be perfect myself in this area, having internally rolled my eyes at the first person (though I outwardly told her gently she should just jump in and ask to help if it's in an area she is gifted in and has the time and desire to serve in) and silently stewed in the second example, not asserting my needs by letting the inviters know what my situation is - I know I can't assume they know.

What have some of your experiences been? What would you like to change about yourself or your friends and family in this area?
